Welcome to Mrs Darley's Blog

This blogspot has been created especially for those who wish to share their ideas and thoughts about the natural world as the year turns and the ancient Pagan festivals that were once celebrated by our ancestors.

Poetry, prose craft work, ancient cure craft and general thoughts and feelings on how the change in the weather and seasons makes you feel are all encouraged and welcomed.

Mrs Darley was my once next door neighbour when I lived amongst the wilds of Bodmin Moor in Cornwall back in the early 1990's. Her charismatic ways and unending wisdom lead me on a journey of self discovery as I spiralled ever further into her magical world.

She has since become the central character in the 'Mrs Darley' series of books.

The Arrival of the Sap Moon

At last the Sap Moon is due to enter our skies t 19.51 tomorrow (11th March). This is the Moon that the Celts would have been waiting for it heralded better times to come. It foretold that the winter was almost at an end and the way almost clear for the spring. With the threat of snow today however, we might have to wait a while before a little sesonal warmth is felt!
This Moon was so called because the sap was in deed rising and that with the 'Seed Moon' in April the planting time could begin.

The Binding

Fresh on the wings
Of a March wind
You run.....

Wild and free
Yet bound,
With knowing
Yet unsure.

Feel the blood of life
Coursing through your veins.
Feel the animal passion
Rising in your loins.

Run, run, wild and free
For She is but a whisper away...
Know
That when you gaze upon Her face,
Her beauty will bind;
Your destiny beckon.

Spring Equinox

This coming Sunday, the 20th March, sees the astrological event known as the Spring Equinox, an occasion when there are equal hours of light and darkness. The word 'equinox' stems from two Latin words: 'aequus' meaning equal and 'nox' meaning night.

The equinox, was an occasion marked by the neolithic inhabitants of these isles and for those who acknowledge the festival today it is important on three counts:

  • It acts as the mid point marker of the sun's journey from winter through to summer (opposite if you are in the southern hemisphere)

  • It has been essential in the calculation of the Christian festival of Easter for centuries (more about that next time)

  • It coincides with the sewing of many crops in the farming calendar.

From this point on until the autumnal equinox in September daylight hours will exceed those of darkness and the long cold days of winter will once again slip into the memory archives.

This is a time to bring a sense of balance into your life between work and play, between relationships and self. It is also time to put all the plans into action that you have made during the dark days and seeing your dreams rise along with the sap.

Happy Equinox!
